Chapter Eleven

Leo

I pull the pot off the burner and spin toward the sink, draining the pasta and tossing it in some light oil. The sauce is simmering on the back burner and veggies and shrimp are sautéing nicely. I put two different wines in an ice bucket, took the nicer plates from the cabinets and washed them. I scan the kitchen and notice my sister standing in the doorway. Her arms are crossed, an evil smile on her face, and she’s leaning against the door frame. I ignore her and go back to my task. The oven is preheating, so I start slicing bread to cover with garlic butter. The vegetables for the sauce and shrimp need attention, which means I can turn my back on Rae. I once came home early to find her and August cooking in nothing but aprons. Not only was it unsanitary, but also disgusting. I have nothing against naked relations, unless it’s my sister and her boyfriend. I had many choice words that day.

“You’re cooking for her?” Rae breaches the threshold to the kitchen and walks to the fridge.

“I am.” I stir the sauce then the vegetables.

“Is that shrimp?” Rae points from next to me and I slap her hand, blocking her with my body.

“Very observant.” I deadpan.

“She’s allergic.” Rae shrugs. I freeze. My heart stops, and my mouth falls open like in the cartoons. “Oh my god I’m kidding!” Rae starts laughing and I let out a growl. “You should have seen your face!” Rae has to put her soda down as she doubles over laughing.

“Not fucking funny.” I growl. Going back to cooking and ignoring her cackling laughter.

“This is how it feels when you try to kill me at least once a week.” She wipes her eyes.

“No, it’s not. That feels like I’m killing my sister, not my girlfriend. I like her, you’re an ass.” I say the word and it suddenly feels different. Rae notices, too.

“Girlfriend. Good job.” My jerk of a sister stops laughing to offer a fist bump. I take it. “So you talked?”

“Uh, yeah. Since you’re leaving, she’s coming here. I thought…” I trail off. I have no idea what I thought.

“While you’re getting laid, tell her to get that stick outta your ass.” Rae winks at me, but I don’t fall into her banter, not now, not about this. My sister studies my face and her brows draw together. “You haven’t told her.” It’s a statement, not a question.

“No.” I shrug like it’s not a big deal.

Rae is suddenly next to me, wooden spoon in hand to help me stir two things at once. “She’s not going to care. Tuesday is too far gone for something so trivial to bother her.” I don’t say anything. “I haven’t told any of them because it doesn’t matter. Like, it’s just part of who you are, but Tues is super in love with you, like the actual you, not just the pretty packaging.” Rae and I rarely have real conversations. We joke and yell and argue.
